Administering Demand Letters from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

Overview

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Coordination of Benefits and Recovery (COB&R), is the organization that oversees the Medicare Coordination of Benefits.

Process Considerations:

  • CMS, COB&R works with Employee Trust Funds (ETF) for coordination of benefits to verify if Medicare is the primary or secondary payer.
  • If CMS, COB&R determines Medicare should be the secondary payer, a claim will be forwarded for collection.
    •  A demand letter will be sent to the employer, UW Shared Services, and the health insurance carrier.
    • The employer is allowed 60 days to resolve the issue until a second notice is sent.

Instructions

Demand Letters from CMS, COB&R are handled internally by UW Shared Services. If you receive requests/documentation, please forward to UW Shared Services for processing.
