Accessing Microsoft 365 Teams Chats Export
Overview:
This document outlines the process for accessing migrated M365 Teams chat data.Process Considerations:

M365 Teams chats export file will have been placed at the following directory: Your OneDrive > UWSA Teams Chats
Instructions
- Locate your chat zip file. Your OneDrive > UWSA Teams Chats
- Right click on the zip file and select Extract All... from the menu.
- Click the Extract button.
You now should see a Chats folder and an index file.

Open the “index.html” file, it should open your default web browser. In the example shown Microsoft Edge is the default – this will work with Google Chrome or FireFox.
*Note: if you have several hundred conversations it may take a few minutes to open the file. Wait for the load icon in the tab to complete before trying to navigate or the page may be unresponsive. -
The left side provides the team conversations you can click on and view.
- Note - Chats are listed as “ChatType – Chat Title” – if a chat title does not exist then a list of users in the chats is provided. If there are more than 10, then the chat title will be “Conversation with X members” with X being number of users in the conversation.
The right side provides the contents of the selected team chat.
*Note - You can open the conversation in a new tab to get a full screen view of it using “Open in new tab” hyperlink.
- Conversation statistics are shown at the top of each conversation
This includes:
- Chat Create Date/Time – date and time the chat conversation was created.
- Chat Members – members available that are part of the conversation. This shows their display name.
- Chat Type – this can be a Group, OneOnOne, or a Meeting.
- Chat Message Count – how many messages exist in the conversation.

Chat messages are assembled as followed:
