Enroll Self-service Account Recovery Options in Okta

Overview:

This guide shows you how to setup secondary authenticators in Okta to allow for self-service account recovery in the event of being locked out or a forgotten password.

  1. Log in to the Okta Dashboard:

  2. Click on your name in the upper right corner of the Okta Dashboard.

  3. In the drop-down menu, select "Settings"

  4. Enroll one or more of the below recovery options:

Secondary email address:

  1. Under "Personal Information" click "Edit"

  2. In the box next to "Secondary Email" enter your alternate email address.

  3. Click on "Save" at the bottom of the "Personal Information" section.
  4. If you are replacing an existing secondary email address additional verification will be required, please continue with the steps below.
    1. Your new secondary email address will display along with a message stating that confirmation is required.

    2. A "Notice of pending email address change" will be sent to your old secondary email address and to your primary mailbox to notify you that the change is occurring.

    3. An email will be sent to the address you entered as your new secondary email. Use the “Confirm email change” link to confirm the email address so it can be added to your Okta profile.

    4. You may need to sign into Okta again to complete the change.

Phone:

  1. Scroll down to "Security Methods"

  2. To the right of "Phone" click on "Set up"

  3. Click on "Set up" to begin enrolling your phone, you will be forced to re-authenticate before proceeding.

  4. Select "SMS" or "Voice Call" to receive a code either through an audio call or text message.

  5. Enter the code when prompted

  6. Your phone will now show in your "Security Methods"
